Want an AWESOME sunscreen?
Posted on
Here's what to look for to keep you and your family safe in the sun.
- SPF 30 blocks 96.7% of UVB rays (when used correctly).
- Broad Spectrum means it’ll block UVA rays as well, which is great (and important) because UVA rays also contribute to skin cancer and early skin ageing.
- Mineral sunscreens are AWESOME!
- Look for Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide as the active ingredient. They're GRASE! (That is, Safe and Effective according to the US FDA. No other UV filter currently meets that standard.)
- Mineral UV filters won't irritate sensitive skin the way many chemical UV filters do.
- They won't absorb into your bloodstream the way chemical UV filters do.
- Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide won't mess with your hormones.
- If you're pregnant, you'll want to avoid too much exposure to salicylates. Many chemical UV filters (Homosalate, Octisalate, Octinoxate) are salicylates -- another reason to go mineral. But keep an eye out for salicylates listed in the ingredients, because many mineral sunscreens use them too. And do check with your midwife or GP for any questions.
- Bonus tip, look out for phenoxyethanol, a skin irritant that is unfortunately common in skincare and sunscreens (mineral and otherwise).
What about for babies under 6 months?
It’s a myth that you can’t use sunscreen on young babies. Of course, check with your GP if you have any questions, and always try to keep your baby out of the sun – indoors, in the shade, under an umbrella, with long sleeves and hats. But sunscreen is important for babies too because their sensitive skin can burn more easily. Again, look for a mineral sunscreen... for all the reasons listed above!
Happy sun-chasing! xx
